The medical reports add that he has thrombocytopenia due to anemia that necessitated blood transfusions, according to the latest medical report.
“The condition of the Holy Father continues to be critical. Therefore, as explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger. This morning, Pope Francis experienced an asthma-like respiratory crisis of prolonged intensity, which required the administration of high-flow oxygen” reads the statement issued by the Vatican.
It adds that “the blood tests performed today also revealed thrombocytopenia (a lower than normal platelet count), associated with anemia, which required blood transfusions.”
The Pope Francis “remains alert and spent the day in an armchair, although he is more uncomfortable than yesterday” the note added.
“At the moment, the prognosis remains guarded” continued the medical report from this Saturday.
The pope will remain in the hospital for at least all of next week until he is cured of his bilateral pneumonia and can continue treatment at his residence in Santa Marta, but “it will take time,” assured Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of surgery at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, who has operated on Francis on previous occasions.
The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome last Friday due to his respiratory problems, which were found to be due to bronchitis caused by a polymicrobial infection, along with bilateral pneumonia.
